AUBURN HILLS -- When the NBA playoffs began, the Detroit Pistons anticipated their bench might be useful.
But after losses in Games 1 and 2 to the Cleveland Cavaliers, it looks like Detroit's best chance at winning a game in this series will depend on the play of their backups. Detroit's second unit helped turn a sure-fire Cavaliers blowout in Game 2 into a game in which the outcome was not solidified until late in the fourth quarter.
quot;I think we'll see a little bit more of their bench in Game 3,quot; Cleveland guard Mo Williams said.
This series has not been good to Detroit's starters.
In the first two playoff games, all of the Pistons' starters were inconsistent, indecisive and ineffective -- kind of like the Pistons' season.
Meanwhile, Detroit's backups continue to make the most of their opportunities to play meaningful minutes.
quot;With the second group guys, it showed it doesn't matter what we do coverage-wise,quot; Pistons coach Michael Curry said. quot;If you go out, execute it and do it extremely hard, we'll be OK.quot;
It's Curry's point about playing hard that seems to be one of the bigger concerns about his aging starters.
While Curry said he doesn't plan to make any lineup changes, he wouldn't rule it out, either.
quot;We'll see,quot; Curry said. quot;It's tough to change lineups at this time. Maybe you can sub a little quicker depending on guys.quot;
Especially if the Pistons starters get behind early, which happened in Games 1 and 2.
quot;I take my hat off to the young guys,quot; said Antonio McDyess, Detroit's starting power forward. quot;(Tuesday) they played with a lot of heart, which I think the starters are kind of lacking right now.quot;
McDyess' comments are a stinging indictment of a veteran team whose core players look overmatched and overwhelmed at just about every position on the floor against the Cavs.
quot;It's like we do it (play well) in spurts, two or three minutes, and then you won't see it the rest of the game,quot; McDyess said. quot;It's frustrating for us as players. I'm sure for the coaching staff. We have to come together as a team and find some kind of way.quot;
Pistons guard Will Bynum has heard reasons for why Detroit is down 2-0, and why many believe the Pistons have no shot at winning a game, let alone the series.
quot;I think we're making a lot of excuses instead of just going out and getting the job done,quot; Bynum said. quot;We have to be on a string and have to be a family. What one person says, everybody has to follow. And I don't think we've been doing that the first two games. We did it in the fourth quarter of (Game 2), but we haven't been doing that the first two games.quot;
