For the first time this season, the Cavaliers are changing their roster. Monday they decided not to re-sign forward Jawad Williams after his second 10-day contract expired.
Multiple league sources confirmed the team plans to replace Williams by signing swingman Trey Johnson from the NBA Development League to a 10-day contract today.
Johnson, a 6-6 guard / forward in his second year out of Jackson State, averaged 20.1 points and 4.8 assists for the Jam in Bakersfield, Calif.
He was in training camp this season with the Phoenix Suns and last season with the New Orleans Hornets. He's also played in Europe.
Johnson's game resembles that of Cavs guard Tarence Kinsey, who went down with a sprained ankle last week and will be out at least three weeks.
Without Kinsey and Delonte West, likely out about two more weeks with a fractured wrist, the Cavs found themselves thin at the guard spot.
That turned out to be at Williams' expense. The St. Edward graduate had to be re-signed for the rest of the season if the Cavs wanted to keep him because he'd played out two 10-day contracts.
Williams made the Cavs as a long shot out of training camp. He was released in early January and then signed the 10-day deals. He played a total of 10 minutes in nine games, scoring four points.
Well-liked within the locker room, there is a chance the Cavs could look to re-sign Williams later in the season.
