DRAFT PICKS:
J.J. Hickson, F, 6-9, 242, North Carolina State -- Athletic forward who is as raw as they come. He's extremely long and will eventually block shots and score in the paint. Darnell Jackson, F, 6-8, 250, Kansas -- Hard-working big man who bangs around the basket. He's one of five Kansas players who were drafted.
Sasha Kaun, C, 6-11, 250, Kansas -- He's signed to a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow in Russia. The Cavs will hold his rights. He's a skilled big man who can score and rebound.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Cavs need to add another big man to the roster, either in free agency or via trade. Ben Wallace, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Joe Smith are all well past 30 years old. Their fourth big, Anderson Varejao, could opt out of his contract after the 2008-09 season.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Cavs will likely use their mid-level exception on a wing player, someone to shore up their perimeter defense. They expressed interest in James Posey of Boston, a Cleveland-area native would have been a good fit with the Cavs, but he signed with Orlando.
PLAYER NOTES:
--Veteran G/F Devin Brown is not expected to return to the Cavs. He's an unrestricted free agent. One possible replacement is Mavericks G/F Devean George.
--Cavs draft picks J.J. Hickson (No. 19 overall) and Darnell Jackson (No. 52) will have to be signed before they play in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Hickson, a 19-year-old power forward from North Carolina State, is expected to sign a two-year contract worth $2,742,060 ($1,329,480 in 2008-09 and $1,412,580 in 2009-10). The Cavs will hold an option on the 2010-11 contract worth $1,495,680, and the qualifying offer on the 2011-12 contract will be worth $2,303,347. Jackson, a second-round pick from national champion Kansas, will likely sign a two-year contract worth $1,178,534. He'll likely earn the NBA minimum of $442,114 in 2008-09 and $736,420 in 2009-10. In the past, the Cavs have guaranteed both years of the contract.
--The Cavs have added veteran forward/center Robert "Tractor" Traylor to their summer-league roster. He's played with the Cavs on two previous occasions, and played well both times. The 6-8, 284-pounder was acquired in the Bob Sura trade from Milwaukee on June 27, 2000, and averaged 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds that season. The Cavs signed him as a free agent on Aug. 5, 2004, and he averaged 5.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. The 2004-05 season was his last in the NBA. It might be a bit far-fetched to think he'll be back in 2008-09, but crazier things have happened. The University of Michigan product, who has missed considerable time with heart problems, is only 31 years old.
--The Cavs are still talking with G Delonte West and G Daniel Gibson, both restricted free agents. One agent said they've both probably asked for mid-level exception-type money. The question is: Are they worth it?
