Cleveland Cavaliers Roster Report 2009-08-13

Cleveland Cavaliers Roster Report 2009-08-13
PLAYER NEWS:

--The Cavs might invite former Kansas University G Russell Robinson to training camp. With Mo Williams, Delonte West, LeBron James and Anthony Parker all capable of playing point guard, there just aren't any minutes available for another player. However, they need a point guard for practice purposes in training camp, and the 6-3, 200-pound Robinson might fit the bill.

--The Cavs waived G Tarence Kinsey's $855,198 contract before it became guaranteed on Aug. 1. He appeared in 50 games, including three starts, during the 2008-09 season. He averaged 2.0 points and 0.8 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game. He was arrested for driving under the influence in June in Tampa, Fla. Kinsey became expendable when the Cavs signed free agent Anthony Parker.

--Apparently, the Cavaliers will take a pass on veteran F Bruce Bowen. Bowen, 38, was waived by the Bucks last week before his $4 million salary was guaranteed. The Bucks still owe him a buyout figure of $2 million. The 6-foot-7, 200-pounder had spent the previous eight seasons in San Antonio, where he was known as a dogged defender. After being waived last Friday, there were rumors that either the Cavs or Celtics would sign him. However, the Cavs are probably not going to sign him, a source said.

--There's nothing new to report on the Leon Powe situation. The Cavs have interest in the 6-8, 240-pound forward, but might be reluctant to offer a two-year deal. He had ACL and microfracture surgeries on his knee and won't be ready to play until January at the earliest.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--F/C J.J. Hickson (back spasms) will likely be held out of the Las Vegas Summer League. The 6-foot-9, 242-pounder was shut down at the end of the season for almost a month. Whenever he works out and gets on the court, he experiences back spasms.

"We're waiting for the pain and swelling to go down," agent Andy Miller said. "There's been some swelling and it's been uncomfortable. He's had an MRI."

At the appropriate time, Hickson will get back on the court and start the process again.

"There's no need for surgery," Miller said.

DRAFT PICKS:

Christian Eyenga, G-F, 6-6, 210, Republic of Congo (first round) -- Very athletic wing player might be a few years off from stepping foot in the NBA. Might have been the biggest surprise pick in the first round.

Danny Green, G-F, 6-6, 210, North Carolina (second round) -- The Cavs have liked Green for at least two years. He's the same exact size as Eyenga, but has a great pedigree and an NCAA championship ring with the Tar Heels.

Emir Preldzic, G-F, 6-9, 205, Turkey (second round) -- The Cavs bought this pick from Phoenix. He's under contract in Istanbul, where he'll stay for a while. The Cavs like his versatility and ability to play some point guard, shooting guard and small forward.
