DRAFT PICKS:
J.J. Hickson, F, 6-9, 242, North Carolina State -- Athletic forward who is as raw as they come. He's extremely long and will eventually block shots and score in the paint. Darnell Jackson, F, 6-8, 250, Kansas -- Hard-working big man who bangs around the basket. He's one of five Kansas players who were drafted.
Sasha Kaun, C, 6-11, 250, Kansas -- He's signed to a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow in Russia. The Cavs will hold his rights. He's a skilled big man who can score and rebound.
PLAYER NOTES:
--The Cavaliers have five training-camp invitees: C Lance Allred, G Michael Dickerson, F Ronald Dupree, G Vernon Hamilton and F Jawad Williams. Assuming G Eric Snow will be on the roster, that leaves one opening for the invitees. Dickerson left abruptly after practice on Oct. 2 to attend to a personal matter. The Cavs didn't know if he would return in time for the Oct. 4 Wine and Gold Scrimmage at the University of Akron.
--G Delonte West said he's comfortable playing shooting guard if that's where he finds minutes.
"During the times I've played off the ball in Boston and Seattle, I've flourished as much as I did with the basketball," he said. "I've always been a shooting guard. I'll let someone else take the pressure off and I'll just let the jumpers fly."
At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, he'd be a bit undersized at the two spot. He said he has a big heart and would welcome the challenge.
--C Zydrunas Ilgauskas has two seasons remaining on his five-year, $50.1 million contract. The Lithuanian native turned 33 years old in June and doesn't know how much he has left in his tank.
Ilgauskas is starting his 13th season with the Cavs. He hopes it's his best. He knows once he hangs up his size 16 sneakers, it's going to be difficult to recapture the kind of excitement that goes along with being an NBA player.
"I'll play out this contract and then we'll see," Ilgauskas said. "I've thought about it, but I haven't come to that decision. During the season, there are so many highs and lows. When everything is going well, the fans are screaming and you are winning, you cannot duplicate that feeling anywhere else in life. When things go wrong, you just want to quit right there."
Ilgauskas has an early termination option on his 2009-10 season, but he said he's not going to exercise it. Of course, he'd have trouble recouping $11.5 million on the open market. He said he'd consider signing another deal with the Cavs.
--The Cavs will try to limit F LeBron James' minutes to fewer than 40 a game (good luck). Every year he's among the league leaders in minutes played.
"I could have gotten more rest (last summer)," James said. "I traded rest for representing my country, doing it on the biggest stage in the world and to win a gold medal."
--F LeBron James has been wearing a No. 6 jersey in practice.
"This is my Olympic number," he said. "I'm just wearing it in practice."
