There's so much competition right now, if the Cavaliers' perimeter players aren't on top of their game, they won't play.
Such is the case for Wally Szczerbiak at the moment. In his last three games, the veteran guard/forward has played a total of 27 minutes.
Cavs coach Mike Brown hinted that Szczerbiak has had some problems defensively, which has cost him some playing time. Also, he came into Monday's Magic game shooting 31.5 percent from the field.
"One thing that Wally has to do is bust his behind defensively," Brown said. "He got beat back door a couple times. That's something he knows he has to correct.
"He's a shooter. He's got to knock down shots. That's what he gets paid to do."
Brown also said both Devin Brown and Damon Jones are playing better basketball than Szczerbiak.
The Cavs are home against Detroit on Wednesday.
MAGIC 104, CAVS 90: The Cavs crumbled down the stretch and were beaten up by the Southeast Division-leading Magic at Amway Arena.
"For me, this wasn't a statement game," Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "You make statements in the playoffs."
The Cavs, playing on the second night of a back-to-back set, couldn't prevent an onslaught from the 3-point line. Orlando made 14-of-32 from behind the arc.
The Cavs (38-30) stormed to a 63-53 lead with 4 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Magic closed the third on a 20-9 run, capped by guard Jameer Nelson's three-point play with 20.3 seconds remaining. It handed Orlando a 73-72 advantage it never relinquished.
Forward Rashard Lewis, scoreless in the first half because of foul trouble, established himself after halftime and never let up. He had all 21 of his points in the second half.
"The difference in the ballgame in the second half was that we couldn't stop Lewis," Brown said.
Forward LeBron James paced all scorers with 30 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
