Cleveland Cavaliers Getting Inside 2008-03-29

Cleveland Cavaliers Getting Inside 2008-03-29
Despite many encouraging signs as of late, Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson wasn't activated for Wednesday's game.

"I need a couple more days," Gibson said.

He's now hoping to play in Saturday's game in Detroit.

Gibson has missed 18 games with a high ankle sprain suffered on Feb. 20 in Indiana.

"(Gibson) went through practice (on Tuesday)," Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "When we think it's right for these guys to play, they'll play. I think it's the right thing (to do)."

Brown has yet to get the entire team on the floor together, as forward/center Ben Wallace (back spasms) is also sidelined.

"We still have to figure out team chemistry and rotations," he said. "We're to the point where we're starting to peak.

"Gib hasn't played with Delonte (West) yet. He hasn't played with Ben yet. I can go on and on about the different combinations I have to figure out. We're still searching and putting together. The injuries, coupled with the new team, makes it more challenging."

HORNETS 100, CAVS 99: Hornets point guard Chris Paul dished off to teammate David West, who drained a 17-foot jumper with 0.6 seconds remaining for the game-winner. It was the 6-foot guard's 20th assist on the night, just one off his NBA high this season.

The Cavs (40-32) had taken a 99-98 lead with 7.7 seconds remaining on LeBron James' drive to the basket.

But Paul, who had an off shooting night at 5-of-17, still found a way to win.

"Once I got in (the lane), I called David West 'the 17-foot assassin,'" Paul said. "I knew he would be somewhere behind me, so when I saw him, I was like, 'Thank goodness.'"

Paul came into the game leading the NBA in assists and steals. He finished with 15 points and one turnover in almost 43 minutes.

"That's why he's the best point guard in the league," James said.

The Hornets, who have the best record in the Western Conference at 49-21, were 11-of-22 from behind the arc. Forward Peja Stojakovic was 6-of-9 from the three-point line, while reserve guard Jannero Pargo was 3-of-5.

Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas had a season-high 29 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks. He was 13-of-19 from the field.

James added 21 points and eight assists, but had just four points in the fourth quarter. He has now scored 20 or more points in 49 consecutive games.
