Cavs lead league in Fatheads

Cavs lead league in Fatheads
Technically, the Cavaliers didn't win anything by sweeping the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

But they were the first team selected for the new NBA Fathead Tradeables Collectors Team Sets, which will be available Friday.

Since Dan Gilbert owns both operations, and many of the Fathead executives are part of the Cavs' ownership group, this is not a huge surprise. But what makes the collectors team sets unique in the world of collectibles is that every player and coach will have his own Fathead card, along with a Cavaliers logo.

If you love assistant coach Hank Egan, or guard Tarence Kinsey, along with Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao, this is the set for you.

"The Cavs have one goal in mind as one dynamic team, so our complete roster of players in the Cavs Tradeables set reflects that mind-set - one team, one goal," said Fathead Chief Executive Officer Patrick McInnis, who came up with the idea for the team set three weeks ago. "The sum of 15 is greater than one. I wanted to include the coaches because they are influential in creating the right philosophy and culture that is instrumental to winning a championship."

The collectors team sets are an outgrowth of Fathead Tradeables, packages of five 5x7 sport-specific Fathead cards. Think of the baseball cards you traded as a kid, only bigger and minus the sugary, brittle bubble gum. And while you can't stick these between the spokes of your bike tires, you can stick the vinyl wall graphics anywhere - and easily move them and stick them somewhere else.

Gilbert and company did not invent Fathead. They first became acquainted with the product in 2005, when then-Quicken Loans executive Todd Lunsford ordered a Tom Brady Fathead for his son Austin. Lunsford, now the Fathead president, thought the product was so cool, he told Gilbert, who ordered a Barry Sanders Fathead. At the time, Fathead was licensed to produce only NFL figures.

Within a year, Gilbert bought the company and, much like he did with the Cavs, expanded and improved the operation. Now there are more than 500 Fatheads from the NFL, NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball and NASCAR, as well as Disney, Warner Brothers and Marvel, among others. Walking into the Fathead offices in Livonia, Mich., right next door to Quicken Loans, one is greeted by Fatheads of Sidney Crosby, Hannah Montana, David Beckham and President Barack Obama.

The graphics have become a badge of honor, sort of like making the cover of the Wheaties box used to be. Players, such as the Yankees' Joba Chamberlain, are clamoring to be included.

The full-size Fatheads are available in sporting goods stores or online at fathead.com and cost about $100, with smaller "sidekicks" available for about $50. The new team collector sets will be available Friday for $24.99 in the Cavs' team shop and online, as well as at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Besides the wall characters and team logos, there are Fathead computer covers and furniture. In the works are wall coverings of entire stadiums and ballparks. Custom Fatheads, meaning parents can send in photos of little Susie and Tommy to be reproduced as Fatheads, will be available in mid-May.

"We're trying to cover the universe, one Fathead at a time," McInnis said.
